In chapters twelve through fifteen, Vance assesses the role of poverty in terms of his acceptance to Yale, the value of social connections in terms of social capitol and its expenditure in upward socioeconomic mobility, how luck comes to bear on our ability to achieve the American Dream, and the social responsibility those that have obtained the American Dream have to those who have, or cannot, achieve the same.
