Blackboard Ultra: Preparing For Ultra

This page will provide information related to the College's transition from Blackboard Learn Original to Blackboard Learn Ultra and serve as an ongoing resource once Ultra is fully implemented in Fall 2026.

Preparing Blackboard Original Courses for Conversion to Blackboard Ultra

Last updated on November 19, 2025

This page will be updated regularly as new information becomes available. Announcements will be posted to the Blackboard "Institution Page" to alert faculty of updates. Major updates will also be communicated via email.

Prior to converting courses to Ultra, some course maintenance will be required in order to experience the smoothest possible transition.

Not every course uses all tools and features, if you are unsure of which topics below will impact your course(s) during the conversion process, please reach out to Online Learning & Instructional Innovation (OLII) for personalized assistance.

In addition to the support documentation provided below, OLII will also be hosting in-person and virtual workshops to assist faculty with preparing their course(s) for conversion to Ultra. Please check the Employee Development Calendar for dates and times and be sure to register 24 hours in advance to receive virtual session links.

If you are unable to attend any of the scheduled workshops, please submit a request to arrange a 1:1 or cohort session.

Undeployed Tests

When courses are converted from Blackboard Original to Blackboard Ultraundeployed tests (tests that are created but not made available to students) will automatically convert into question pools in Ultra.

To ensure a smooth and accurate conversion, please review and edit your undeployed tests in your Blackboard Original course(s). Look for:

  • Tests you no longer intend to use - find and delete them using the instructions provided below.
  • Unintentional copies of tests and question pools - find and delete them using the instructions provided below.

Content Collection

The Content Collection is where all uploaded files and course copies of files are stored for each course. Prior to converting your course(s) to Ultra, the Content Collection should be reviewed for:

  • Files you no longer intend to use - find and delete them using the instructions provided below.
  • Unintentional copies of files and folders - find and delete them using the instructions provided below.

Instructions for Managing the Content Collection

Wikis

Wikis will NOT convert to Ultra, any existing wiki content will be lost when the course is converted. If you are using any Wikis in your Blackboard Learn Original course(s), please reimagine these activities for use with another assessment tool or feature.

Nested Folders

Nested Folders are folders inside of other folders. The Ultra course conversion process will only allow folders to be nested up to four levels. Any folders or content beyond that will be lost.

Instructions for Managing Nested Folders

Course Links

Course Links are a Blackboard Learn Original feature that allow linking to other pages and resources inside of the same course. Course Links will NOT convert to Ultra. Content and navigation structures using or referencing Course Links should be reviewed and modified as needed.

Folders with Content Descriptions

Some courses use Folder Descriptions to display content. Folder Descriptions do not convert to Ultra well. Any Folder that is being used to display content such as assignment instructions, hyperlinks, or multimedia using the Folder Description should be changed to a Content Item.

Folders simply using appropriate descriptive text will be easier to manage, more guidance on this will be provided soon.

Instructions for Managing Folder Descriptions - Coming Soon!
