Glossary of Terms

Articulation Agreements

Articulation agreements are formal partnerships between two institutions that outline how specific academic programs transfer. These agreements establish course equivalencies, admission requirements, and recommended coursework to ensure a seamless transition for students continuing their education at another institution.

Special Agreements

Special agreements are formalized partnerships between institutions that may provide additional benefits beyond course transfer. These agreements can include guaranteed admission, dual enrollment opportunities, honors program admission, and discounts on tuition, fees, or books. Special agreements are sometimes referred to as Memoranda of Understanding (MOU), Letters of Understanding (LOU), or Partnerships.

Prior Learning Assessment (PLA) / Credit for Prior Learning (CPL)

PLA/CPL is a structured process that allows students to earn college credit for knowledge and skills acquired outside of traditional academic settings. This can include credit for work experience, military service, professional certifications, independent study, volunteer work, or other life experiences that demonstrate college-level learning.
