Susquehannock Geographic Sphere of Influence

Tribal Organization

The tribal elders consulted for this LA project describe historic Susquehannocks as relatives of Haudenosaunee (also known as Iroquios). Archaeological analysis of the material culture affirms their “common roots” (Kent 14). In the 18th century, the various Haudenosaunee nations adopted the Susquehannock. The Haudenosaunee are a distinctly heterogenous confederacy where cultural diversity proliferates. Adopted groups and individuals would continue to maintain their cultural identity and practices. Although this signals the end of the Susquehannock as a tribal nation, it is not the end of Susquehannock culture, which persists into the present.
